I Never Meant to be a Rebel by Jessica Bell

I Never Meant to be a Rebel by Jessica Bell

I do believe that the author did not seek to become a rebel. Sometimes rebellion finds us. But what is rebellion anyway? Individuality, creativity, strong opinions, ambition. They all add up to rebellion. Nobody said being a rebel was bad.

If this is what a rebel looks like, bring me more of them. Everyone should rebel some of the time. Knowing when to fight and when to stay silent comes with experience. Sometimes. And experience isn't a linearly increasing resource. It skips and reverts sometimes. Some events add buckets of experience, and some just add a drop or two.

I never like reviewing good books. This is a great book. Any memoir told by someone who is striving to find the truth and present it to the reader is gripping. Just as one written by a famous politician to make money is never that interesting. You can feel Jessica uncovering very personal truths through her writing, and never more so than here.

A great book teaches us about ourselves. This one taught me a few things about me. It reconfirmed a few recent decisions I have taken in my own life, not least to make my own writing more central to my day to day. Thank you Jessica for writing it.
